About SID
Safer Internet Day is the name of an exceptionally significant event that began as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004, and was later taken over by the Insafe network as one of their earliest actions in 2005.
Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its original geographic zone and is now celebrated in more than 180 countries and territories worldwide!
Internet violence, digital identities, and social networks are just some of the topics to which Safer Internet Day pays special attention, raising awareness about the challenges of the online environment, offering advice on coping with the dynamic online reality that presents challenges to today’s society, and whose misuse can lead to disproportionate consequences for the victim of violence.
Insafe is the European network of Safer Internet Centers (SIC).
Each national Safer Internet Center conducts awareness-raising campaigns through educational initiatives, runs a helpline, and closely collaborates with young people to ensure an evidence-based approach and the involvement of multiple stakeholders in creating a better internet for all users.
In 2009, the concept of the Safer Internet Day Committee was introduced to strengthen ties with countries outside the current network and invest in the cooperative promotion of the campaign worldwide.
Global SID Committees (and those working towards SID Committee status) work closely with the Safer Internet Day Coordination Team based in Brussels.
